Site visit - St. John’s Fortress

St. John’s Fortress was built in 1646, on a 120 meters high hill north of Šibenik’s old town. It was named after the church that had been there for several centuries. The fortress was built in only 58 days, as the main point of the new defence system of the city, just before the great attack of the Ottoman army.

Throughout centuries, St. John’s Fortress was neglected. However, following the successful revitalization of other Šibenik’s fortresses, in 2016, a project was launched so the fortress was renovated, and opened for visitors in 2022.  Revitalization of the St. John's Fortress is the largest project ever awarded to the City of Šibenik from European Union funds.

Within the area of the St. John's Fortress, with a total area of 18,657 square meters, over 5 and a half thousand square meters of ramparts were renovated, innovative facilities, attractions and products were introduced.

St. John's Fortress also housed an Educational Campus for Youth equipped with smart interaclassrooms, dormitories and presentation spaces. Human rights organizations, organizations in the field of Democratization and Youth, based in Croatia, through this historical space will show us what history teaches us and how inspiring for the actions in future it can be.
